Why SASSA Child Support Grant?
SASSA provides financial aid for those parents who cannot feed their children properly. The key goal of this support is to provide care and the opportunity to needy children to enjoy at least the basic needs of the life. However, a primary caretaker can receive this support for a maximum of six non-biological children. The per month and per child amount for the Child Support Grant is R530 from April 2024.

How Do I Check the SASSA Status for A Child Support Grant?

For Parents/Caretakers: Eligibility Criteria of SASSA Child Support Grant
- If you are a Caretaker or guardian, you must have legal documents such as:
- Court orders
- Official police affidavit
- Social worker’s report
- Legal document from the child’s biological parent
- Or a statement of a child’s school principal.
- The age of the caretaker, guardian, head of family or parents must be over 16 years.
- The relationship of the applicant with the child must be:
- Parents
- Primary caretakers
- Legal guardian
- Foster parents of children
- Citizenship status:
- South African
- Permanent residents
- For Married: combined income of spouses must be equal to or less than R105 600.
- For Single Caretaker or Guardian: Applicants’ yearly income must be equal to or less than R52 800
- If children are with foster parents, then this income limit is not applicable to them.
For Child: Eligibility Criteria of SASSA Child Support Grant
- The age of the child must be less than 18.
- The child must be present in South Africa.
- Child is not eligible for a SASSA grant if he is already receiving a grant from any state
- If a child is living with a primary caretaker or guardian, then they must not receive any amount for their care.
- A primary caretaker or guardian can receive a grant for a maximum of six children. And all must be adopted or non-biological.
You Will Be Unable to Receive a Child Support Grant If You’re:
- If you are paid to take care of the child,
- If you are not the primary caretaker
- If someone else is already receiving a grant for the same child
How to apply for the SASSA Child Grant:

- Visit the office of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
- Please bring your 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID)
- Please bring your birth certificate.
- Also, bring a Marriage certificate if married.
- Proof of maintenance for the child if received.
- For divorced parents: Bring court orders for child custody.
- In the case of dead parents: bring a death certificate If one or both parents are dead.
- In the case of Missing parents: bring the missing person’s report if one or both parents are missing,
- You must bring salary slips, pension slips, and bank statements for the last three months.
- If you are a primary caretaker or foster parent, bring court orders or legal documents.
- Use all documents and fill out the application form.
- Submit it at the SASSA office.
- Wait for up to three months for further information.
Apply Via Referral Family Member
There could be many medical issues, that’s why you may be unable to visit the SASSA office.
- In this case, you can apply with the help of any family member or friend. However, you must have a doctor’s report to show your health issue.
- SASSA will assess your medical report before proceeding with the application.
- Bring all the documents that are listed above, along with the medical report.
- Complete the SASSA child support application form.
- Please submit it
- Receive a receipt as application proof.
The Way to Apply for a Lost ID Or Birth Certificate:
- Visit the nearest SASSA office
- The officer will give you an affidavit
- Fill it on a standard SASSA format
- But you must complete it in the presence of a non-SASSA Commissioner of Oaths
- Attest your statement by a reliable person to verify your name and age.
- The SASSA official will ask you for fingerprints
- Go to the Department of Home Affairs
- Apply for the ID here and get a receipt
- Now, if you are going to apply for a SASSA grant, bring the receipt as Proof of applied ID and birth certificate.
What is the amount of the SASSA Child Support Grant?
SASSA offers R480 per month as a child support grant. However, SASSA announced a new investment for supporting children more. This is called ‘Top-Up”.
This additional support of R240 is for orphans. So, top-up amounts supplement the standard amount of R480 and make a total of R720.
